“A Day On, Not a Day Off”

Did you know that MLK Day, on January 21<sup>st</sup>, is also recognized as a day of service? Here’s a little history about this important day, and ways you can find local projects to lend your time to.
Although Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was January 15, in 1983 the federal holiday designated in his honor set aside the third Monday in January to celebrate his life and life’s work, and since 1994 MLK Day has also had the distinction of being the only Federal holiday that is also a recognized day of service.
MLK Day’s epitaph of “a day on, not a day off” encourages all Americans to use the day to volunteer and support MLK Jr.’s vision of a united, equal society by participating in good works across the country. This year, the holiday falls on January 21 so there is plenty of time left to sign up for a project in your area!
